Disinfection Septic Systems use chlorination or ultraviolet light (UV) to disinfect wastewater effluent before it is discharged to the environment.

In New York and some other states, sand bed filter-treated effluent is further disinfected, for example using a chlorine injection system, before effluent is discharged to the environment.
